World Championships 2025 Update

We want to let you know about some key decisions that have been taken recently about the 2025 Cadet World Championships.

The ICCA Executive Committee has decided that the 2025 World Championship will not be in Argentina. This tough decision was reached following ExComm’s reassessment of the ability of Argentina to hold the 2025 Worlds. Following the resignation of a key member of the Argentinean Cadet Class Association, it became clear that several key aspects were missing, including a host sailing club, and an organising team to put the event together - and from our own experiences in Plymouth, this is a major project to deliver.

ExComm looked at different options for the 2025 Worlds, including Australia, a European venue or an entirely commercial venue. After consideration, it was decided that the European Championship in Lipno will be turned into the 2025 Cadet World Championship.

Whilst their ability to make logistical changes is slight, we have negotiated with Lipno that the Worlds will move right by a day. We have also secured their agreement that we can have the last measurement slot, on Sunday morning, if we wish. We will also run a compressed Nationals, formally ending on a Wednesday. All these measures allow the biggest gap possible between the two events for those travelling to Czechia. We expect the schedule to look like this (see table below), subject to Notices of Race being issued.

We considered moving the UK Nationals to another week. But the reality is that many people have already booked accommodation in Brixham and would lose several hundred pounds if they had to change dates - most Brixham rentals only allow partial refunds after booking.

Throughout all of this, we have sought to balance the needs of different sailors, ranging from those doing their first Nationals to those seeking success at the Worlds. We are also planning:

●      To run an additional, but less formal, day of racing, separate to the Nationals, on Thursday 31 July for those sailors not going to the Worlds. Separate prizes available!

●      To have our World team and Promo team coaches with us for the Nationals in Brixham to prep the sailors as best as possible for Lipno.

●      To scope the possibility of commercial dinghy transportation from Brixham to Lipno. (This may prove too expensive or complex, but if it makes the transport easier we would like to investigate it.)

The World Team selector events will remain unchanged, but the pre-Worlds training programme will be changed to reflect the new dates, and the different sailing environment.

We feel that we have been able to achieve a good outcome despite the circumstances that have been presented to us, and are looking forward to some excellent competition in both Brixham and Lipno!
